State of emergency

I guess I missed the elephant in the room...

I had wanted to visit Malé whilst I was here, but events took over:
During our stay, a political crisis unfolded within the Maldivian government, resulting in the storming of the supreme court by heavily armed troops and the arrest of 2 senior judges and a former President.
The country remains under a state of emergency.

As I am over here working for the UN, there were a few moves to legitimise the current government (in light of the allegations against it) by attempting to use the UN as a kind of affirmation of the stand by the current President. As such, I decided to use the torrential storms as an excuse not to take up the invitation from the Maldivian Defence Force of a boat trip to the capital.
Ah well...
