Malé Airport

sunny 32 °C

Civilisation! Well, at least duty free shopping :)
My leg of our trip to Bangkok begins now, and it's now 06:00 in the UK and I'm guessing Shirley is up and about and ready for her ride to the airport.
A few more photographs of Bandos uploaded onto the blog now that I have a decent internet connection at the airport.
Rather bizarrely the duty free stores are decked out in Chinese New Year decorations..testament I guess to the major investment from China into the Maldives in general. Have heard that the Maldives President received some criticism for selling, I believe, 16 islands to the Chinese. I know that Chinese are keen to secure deep water harbours at strategic locations for trade and security. I expect there will soon be some kind of military presence on those 16 islands!
Also, there were quite a number of Chinese tourists on Bandos, together with a number of Mandarin speaking staff. Would be interesting to know the relative cost for the Chinese in visiting somewhere such as the Maldives...
Next posts will be form Thailand - tot straks!
